Welcome to my Summer Portrait Workshop:
"A Prayer for Playfulness"

To paint is to remember the light in our earliest years.

Step into the lovely culver city, where you can learn the techniques to create a beautiful painting.  This special session invites you to paint capturing the wonder and spirituality of youth, guided by Rena Risby’s warm, painterly alla prima approach.

What to Expect:

  • Guided demonstration on blocking-in, value grouping, and color mixing

  • An emphasis on strong light/dark shapes for visual storytelling

  • Personal feedback throughout the session

  • A finished portrait that captures both form and feeling

All levels welcome.

Whether you are refining your technique or exploring portrait painting for the first time,

this workshop is a space to slow down, connect, and paint meaningfully.

Reserve Your Spot

This June, join me for a special oil painting workshop where we’ll honor the beauty of youth, memory, and spirit.
In a softly lit, thoughtfully curated space—complete with linen tablecloths, candles, and the warmth of community—we will create portraits inspired by the tender magic of childhood.

Our reference features a young boy pausing to blow dandelion seeds into the breeze—a quiet moment of wonder and innocence. You’ll receive a pre-sketched smooth panel, printed reference image, and step-by-step guidance in the alla prima tradition, using the Zorn palette to simplify color mixing and allow your own voice to emerge in the brushwork.
